UNEARTH/ The sedimented nature of objects /

Andrea Alkalay

Contemporary art
2025

At FIKAR, I will deepen my project UNEARTH, begun last year in Saudi Arabia, which explores cycles of decay and disappearance in natural and built environments. By integrating archaeological images, digital archives, construction waste, and natural materials, I’ll examine the island’s ecosystem and history.

Using materials from local ruins and artifacts, I aim to create work that resonates with the community and its surroundings, through edited photographs, digital manipulation, and found objects.

Andrea Alkalay

Andrea Alkalay is an Argentine visual artist working on photography and mix media, with a degree in Industrial Design, therefore drawn to materials and forms to highlight concepts in their symbolic presence. The landscape is a recurring theme at the core of her work, allowing her to investigate territories where past, present, and future are in coexistence. With a focus on the environment, and the concept of nature she questions the societal and emotional realities, such as patterned beliefs influenced by life experience.

"Questioning the complex relationship between humans and their natural environment, as well as the memory in the landscape and its multiple interpretations, are lines of analysis in my search to propose new levels of reflection."

Alkalay’s recent exhibitions include Bienal Sur, the Larreta Museum of Buenos Aires, the Recoleta Cultural Center, as well as international exhibitions in Slovenia, Saudi Arabia, India Sarajevo, and the UAE. She has received notable recognitions, including The Kingdom Photography Grant, the Latin American Professional Award (WPO), and The Light Festival portfolio winner. International publications: PHMuseum, Aesthetica Art Prize, Lenscratch, Fresh Eyes etc.
