Failaka, Hourglass Island

Residency and documentary realisation
2023 - 2024

All around the world, some prominent places leave impressions throughout the ages. Forgotten cities, kingdoms of which only memories still exist. Some other places are time border stones.
Failaka Island is one of these. A real time capsule of the Gulf’s History, patiently revealing its secrets to archaeologists, despite the war’s scars still visible.
But Failaka is ready to write its history again, and several development projects are growing, respectful of the environment and bringing a new dynamic to this territory.
Cradled by the calm waves of the Gulf, the island of Failaka awaits, fighting endlessly the sea winds.
A shipwreck splits the shallow water on the coast. On the wide sabkhas appear the scars of a very far conflict.
With the rhythm of the waves, the prayers and the wind, the island awaits for its rebirth.
In forgotten times, the island saw its shore trampled by Alexander the Great’s army. It has been one grain of sand to this empire, then one of the silk road's port of call.
Failaka awaits her rebirth, as the war has exhausted it.
Failaka awaits its rebirth, hoping to shine again. But the waves, flattering its shore, greedy and aware, will they be able to wait for its resurrection?

Meet the filmmakers

  • After studies in communication, modern literature, theoretical cinema and animal documentary, I seek to create works that combine environment and society.

Having travelled on almost all continents, I feed on cultures, knowledge, differences, and I propose to look through my work at the questions I ask about the world. Through my wonder and my candour, I question our habits, our wills, our fears, our quirks.

  • It is in the heart of factories, foundries, offices, laboratories, that I developed and sharpen my ecological awareness. I jumped off the bandwagon and discovered nature, hides, and art at the service of those who have no voice.

Filled with this effervescence of creation, I decided to expose what is hidden. I want to offer spectator realities that he can grasp and can think truly about.
