Sketchbook Histories: Failaka ‘24-‘25

Zahra Al-Mahdi

Semi-interactive exhibition
2024/2025

Documenting history is something almost everyone does. Whether it's through retelling stories from memory, or "keeping receipts". Looking back, in remembering and in rereading is an act of critique through hindsight. Sketchbook Histories is an online video series with multi-disciplinary approach to historical documentation, and rereading. For this residency, I would like to continue my work along the Sketchbook Histories series.

This would be applied through research on the general experience of being in Failaka, mapping out the island, going down to different locations to document them, and even smaller to a particular personal experience within this context. Through creating this kind of content, other projects must be developed parallel to it; Video poems, drawings, music, etc. This makes it a multi-faceted project that only culminated in a meta-historical document. Sketchbook Histories carries layered content when surrounded by other creatives, since it is a meta presentation of ongoing projects by myself or others around me.

In terms of presentation, it would have to be a continuation of the series in the form on a semi-interactive exhibition. It’s a series of drawings and maps, with an accordion notebook as a center piece. Visitor and viewers of the resulting video could contribute to future installment of Sketchbook Histories by leaving written pieces, small doodles, or short clips for them to be weaved into the narrative of documenting that exhibition.
